NEPAL Study Tour 2016

WHEN: February 11th to 24th – (longer/shorter stays possible)

WHERE: Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

WHO: University students and other adults interested in seeing more of the world, having cross-cultural experiences, learning more about developing countries, helping others, expanding horizons, etc., etc.

WHAT:
I. Visit World Heritage sites such as:
a) Boudhanath – a large, peaceful Buddhist temple;
b) Pasupatinath – a fascinating Hindu temple with many Sadhus, Hindu holy men;
c. Suwambunath, or Monkey Temple – a combination Hindu and Buddhist temples and home to several monkey colonies.

II. Visit Non-Profit Organizations, schools, and children’s homes such as:
a) Maiti Nepal – an internationally recognised organisation working to stop human trafficking, founded by Anuradha Koirala CNN Hero of the year 2010. maitinepal.org;
b) schools and children’s homes in the more rural areas about an hour south of Kathmandu

III. Take part in cross-cultural activities, work with children, and do some light volunteer work for 4-5 days at Early Childhood Development Center, a home for children whose parents are in prison and the children have no where else to live, started by Pushpa Basnet, another CNN Hero of The Year Award Winner in 2012. www.ecdc.org.np/

IV. Visit Chitwan Natural Reserve, take a jungle walk, canoe trip, and see cultural dances

V. Have time to walk the vibrant streets of Kathmandu, do some shopping, relax, and have fun.

HOW MUCH: The in-country costs will be about 110,000 yen (~ $900-$1,000) and will include all domestic transport, including airport pick-up/drop-off, accommodation, most meals, entrance fees to cultural sites, and donations to the various NPOs and children’s homes. Participants will be responsible for their International airfares, some meals, and personal shopping etc.

Accommodation will be at Kathmandu Friendly Home (guest house), ECDC hostel, and likely the Hermitage Guest House in Chitwan – all simple but clean.
